ECO Waste Disposal & Container Storage
Ivcel Ramos • August 30th, 2023
Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust and the world’s most used metals. However, pure aluminum doesn’t occur naturally and producing it is a complex process. It’s a matter that’s often taken for granted in our everyday lives, especially in joyful celebrations, lively parties, and delightful cookouts.
What makes aluminum so great is that it is among the most recyclable materials and can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality. This property makes aluminum recycling a powerhouse in waste reduction. According to the Aluminum Association, aluminum is one of the most recyclable materials, and nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today. By recycling, we reduce the need for raw material extraction, which in turn decreases energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Ductility: Aluminum is very ductile, meaning it can be stretched into thin wires or sheets. This property makes it easy to shape and mold, which is why it’s widely used in packaging, such as aluminum foil and beverage cans.
When we throw away aluminum cans, they end up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution and taking up valuable space. Recycling rates for aluminum cans vary by country, but in the United States, around 50% of cans are generally recycled (US EPA), compared to only 34.9% of all aluminum packages, including food containers and foil, in 2018 (BCG Global) (US EPA). Therefore, while cans recycle well, other aluminum packaging is recycled far less often. Due to a lack of ease and convenience in recycling, along with various laws and regulations making doing so complicated, this trend will only continue as consumers are likely to throw away rather than recycle.
Recycling aluminum cans is incredibly energy-efficient. It requires only about 5% of the energy needed to produce new aluminum from raw materials. This substantial energy savings translates to fewer fossil fuels being burned, reducing the need to extract and produce more aluminum from raw materials. The energy saved through recycling can be redirected to other important areas, such as renewable energy development and community projects.
Incorporating aluminum recycling into your event planning can also elevate the attendee experience. It reflects a commitment to sustainability that resonates with many people today. By providing clearly labeled recycling bins and encouraging guests to participate, organizers can foster a sense of community and shared responsibility. It’s not just about disposing of waste correctly; it’s about building an environmentally conscious tradition. Here are some practical tips to get you started:
No single player alone will make recycling more effective. It will require long-term investments and more collaboration with businesses and other manufacturers up to the scrap yard level. As well as informing consumers of each state’s recycling regulations to ensure smooth operation. It starts with us recycling our aluminum cans and materials to significantly impact your environmental footprint, making your celebration not only a moment of joy but also a step towards sustainability.
